Description:
Primary health care increasingly takes place among a diverse and heterogeneous patient population, with a wide range of belief systems and health practices. In the community, patients now have a wide range of social, cultural, religious, ethnic, regional, and educational backgrounds, as well as different lifestyles and choice of self-treatment. In many cases this has led to inequalities in health care, and problems in communication between patients and health professionals. Culturally-sensitive medical practice is now a growing emphasis in medical education in most industrialised countries, especially those that have absorbed large numbers of immigrants, guest workers, refugees, tourists and expatriates. Cultural competence in health care is also increasingly on the international health agenda, especially since both W.H.O. and UNESCO declared 1996 to be the year of ‘Culture and Health’.
